Ask Dr. McConnehey about acne
Hello,

This is a new specific skin condition discussion forum I am offering to the public to discuss general acne topics. Please feel free to ask any questions you might have about acne. I also encourage you to discuss any previous treatments or products you may have used for acne. Both good and bad reviews are welcome. If you have accurate advice for others on this board, please feel free to offer your advice based from your personal experiences.

If you have acne that is actaully considered rosacea, please discuss that topic in the designated rosacea forum.

Also, note this forum is brand new, please do not be discouraged by the current lack of posts. Although at times I can be very busy I will try my best to respond to your acne questions.

I encourage everyone to sign up for our skin care forum

Sincerely,

Dr. Diane McConnehey

Low Dosage Accutane Regimen
Hello. I have read a lot lately about low dose accutane regimens. In the us, it seems many doctors are prescribing a flat 10 mg per day, as compared to the 2mg/kg standard, and continuing treatment for 6-7 months. In the UK and Canada, doses are as low as 2.5 mg taken twice a week for mild acne in older adults, who are also looking to slightly dry out excess sebum. This dosage is allowed for continuous long-term use, as it not anywhere near the toxicity of the higher dosage. What have you heard about this, and do you ever prescribe this way, or would you be willing to? It seems like a very safe alternative to high dose regimens. My son, age 16, has bad acne that is unresponsive to Proactive, various "cyclines" etc., and I have bothersome breakouts and excessively oily skin at age 43, but we cannot afford the high cost of a high dose accutane regimen. thanks!
